Electronic Pick Pocketing Scams On The Rise As October Deadline Approaches

(MoneyNewsWire.Net, September 29, 2015 ) Kirkland, WA -- A new breed of pick pocketers have sprung up in every major US city. These thieves never touch their victims, yet they steal sensitive bank information that enables them to clone a credit card from anyone's purse or wallet. It's an unfortunate reality of our digital age. Standing just a few inches away, these criminals use an inexpensive radio-frequency identification (RFID) reader to steal credit card information in a practice known as ‘electronic skimming' or ‘contactless theft'.

Vault Security Specialist Leo Hamel say, "With US banks switching all credit card and debit cards to RFID enabled chips, the rise in digital pick pocketing will be off the charts. This will cost all consumers in the long run."

As of October 2015, all US banks will be introducing RFID chips embedded into credit and debit cards. These are designed to make the shopping experience more efficient by using a contactless pay system. The chip in a credit card transmits payment information to the merchant's reader wirelessly. This also allows anyone with a RFID reader, which is readily available on eBay and other sites, to also read the credit card wirelessly.

To find out whether a credit card has an RFID chip, look for a small metal square chip embedded in the card. If the card says, PayPass, Blink or payWave, it has RFID Capabilities.

"There was an incident in a shopping mall where there was a contest where you fill out an entry form for a free car at a stand alone table. Come to find out, there was a RFID reader hidden under the table. When people walked up to fill out the entry forms, the scanner stole their credit card information. Many people were victimized" Reports Mary Willings of Elk & Bear, distributor of Vault Credit Card Protectors.

Once the credit card information is scanned, it is simple to make a clone of the credit card and use at other merchants or online. "Thankfully it's easy to protect yourself. We developed Vault Credit Card Protectors to block the RFID chip in the bank cards. You simple place each card in a protective sleeve, and then all your sensitive financial information is safe." According to Hamel.

Vault Credit Card Protectors are an inexpensive solution to a costly problem. They come in a variety of colors and are available exclusively on Amazon.com
