The chips enable a system of contactless payment and identity confirmation. Bank of America, Citi Bank and JP Morgan Chase all have plans to follow suit, branded for payment as PayPass, Zip, payWave, and ExpressPay.
All these cards are susceptible to electronic skimming – "touchless mugging" is expected to go through the roof. "For the first time ever, digital theft is becoming the norm, and I don't think people are prepared", says security brand VAULT's digital security specialist, Leo Hamel.
Researchers forecast that by the end of 2015, nearly 80% of US purchases will be made using chip cards. They have long warned that 100 million contactless credit cards coming into circulation will lead to a sharp increase in electronic pickpocketing , credit card fraud and identity theft.
Hamel recognizes the increased risk to consumers, "This is why we're so adamant about making people aware how dangerous this is, and how easy it is to protect yourself. "
