(MoneyNewsWire.Net, February 16, 2015 ) United Kingdom, Yorkshire -- In the first week of 2015 alone, Assocham (The Associated Chambers of Commerce) announced that approximately 2277 complaints of credit card fraud had been reported, just in those seven days. According to the association, credit and debit card fraud has increased by six times in the last three years, with that increase set to continue. Cloning of credit, debit and other ATM cards is one of the most prominent cybercrimes in the modern day across the world, along with phishing attacks on online accounts and payments.
What exactly is credit card fraud/identity theft?
Both credit card fraud and identity theft involve a criminal somehow accessing another unsuspecting person's credit card details and personal information, and using it to ‘steal' their identity and use that information as if they were that person. Once these criminals have such information, they can access bank accounts, make payments, obtain new credit cards, apply for benefits, and even apply for mortgages under someone else's name. Furthermore, they can access and take control of existing accounts, running up huge debts that companies will be expecting the real owner of the card to repay.
Anyone with a credit card is a potential target for fraudsters, and there are various ways in which criminals can access such information. One of the most undetectable and prominent methods of theft is wireless theft through electromagnetic interference. This is when criminals scan cards with electronic devices, through clothes, bags and wallets, thereby electronically gathering information stored in the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip present in all modern credit and debit cards. This is known as ‘skimming' and results in thieves gaining access to all personal and confidential information related to that card, which they then clone and programme into another card, undetectably stealing the individual's identity. An easy and convenient way to ensure that this doesn't happen is to use RFID Blocking Sleeves – simple sleeves which fit into normal wallet slots and are designed to hold individual cards. The thin aluminium coating on the inside of the sleeves stops any signals from theft devices from being able to access the RFID chip and ultimately shield all data from criminals.
