Bill 173: Job Training for Inmates

(MoneyNewsWire.Net, February 11, 2015 ) Indianapolis, IN -- Law makers in Indiana are now in the process of passing Senate Bill 173 that would allow truck driving training to inmates. The bill calls for the correction facility to create a program to train minimum-security inmates in trades. Truck driving will not be the only trade offered. The program would also include: manufacturing, plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning as well.

The idea is to provide these inmates with job training that would allow them to obtain employment after released. According to Ben Brown “Three of the most common barriers for reentry are housing, transportation, and employment – with employment being one of the most crucial points,”.

Anyone can agree that we all want safe roads to drive on. But more than that we want safe people driving on the road. This bill will specify which inmates would be eligible to participate in the truck driving program if passed. The bill actually will ban those with violent crimes and those who have health concerns from participating. Senate Bill 173 was created by Senator. R Michael Young. “Whether they go through this program and have a job or not, they are still being released,” Young said. “All were trying to do with this bill is give them a chance to get a job on the outside.”
