(MoneyNewsWire.Net, January 28, 2015 ) Rochester, NY -- 2014 got off to a rough start, with seven people being killed within the first 12 days January. The projected number of pedestrian fatalities was expected to topple over 200.
This set forth a campaign from Mayor de Blasio to reduce the number of fatalities to zero within ten years, which has been dubbed “Vision Zero”. This is an idea which officials have pushed throughout other areas of the nation as well, such as South Carolina’s “Target Zero” campaign.
Luckily, the turnout was much better than expected. In fact, 2014 ended up having the lowest number of pedestrian deaths in the recorded history of NYC (which has been kept track for more or less a century) with the final count being 132.
Some of the major changes that were made to improve conditions for pedestrians in New York included lowering the general speed limit, increased ticketing, and a dozen new traffic safety bills.
De Blasio stated, ““There is no question we are moving this city in the right direction, thanks to stepped up enforcement by the N.Y.P.D., strong traffic safety measures by the Department of Transportation, new laws passed by our legislators and the work of New Yorkers fighting for change.”
The overall number of traffic deaths also dropped about 45 cases compared to 2013.
